テンプル騎士団が世界初の国際銀行だったなんて初耳だ。聞いたこともない。
勿論、テンプル騎士団という存在の概要は知っているつもりでいたが、それはあくまでも十字軍に関連した騎士団としてであり、よもや世界初の国際銀行だったなどという話ではない。
詳しくはこのブログを読まれるといいと思うが、要は「ゴールドスミス・ノートが気になる」と題した私のブログタイトルに対するそのものズバリの回答のようなものが、ここで紹介されているのである。ゴールドスミスでは「預り証」が「銀行券」となり「紙幣（通貨）」となっていったと呼ばれたものが、テンプル騎士団では「預託証券」と呼ばれるだけである。そして担保の裏付けもない紙幣が自己増殖を始める「信用創造」という近代銀行業最大の機能の発見もゴールドスミスと全く同様である。おまけにテンプル騎士団では「信託銀行」機能の創造まで加わっているから驚きだ。
このテンプル騎士団の金融に果たした役割を知れば、なぜ14世紀につづいて起きる銀行業や損害保険業という現代につながるルーツがこの時代に出来上がっていったのかが理解できる。
第１回十字軍（1096年）のあと1119に創設され1307年にフランス国王によって一斉逮捕、異端審問、死刑にされてゆく展開は、滅茶苦茶な脚本によるハリウッド映画でも見ているようである。
しかし、金融に於けるテンプル騎士団の果たした役割が大きければ大きいほど、そういうノウハウや知識を伝授したのは誰なのか？、という当初の疑問は以前残る。テンプル騎士団が創設された当初は純粋にキリストの聖地エルサレムの聖地を奪還しようという大義で始まったわけだから。十字軍の戦費を用意した勢力がいた頃、テンプル騎士団はまだなかったのだから…？。
