聖ベルナールの援護でテンプル騎士団に脚光

・テンプル騎士団初期の経緯をWebで拾ってみたい。

1096年～1099年　第1回十字軍　エルサレム奪還に成功。地中海東岸にエルサレム王国、エデッサ伯国、トリポリ伯国、アンティオキア公国の主要4国をはじめいくつかの十字軍国家がつくられたことにより、多数のキリスト教巡礼者が聖地へ向かって旅ができるようになった。しかし、エルサレム市街は治安が比較的良好に維持されていたものの、十字軍国家のそれ以外の場所は危険な状態だった。エルサレムへ向かう街道には盗賊があふれ、巡礼者たちは日常的に、時には一度に何百人もが虐殺された。このまま放置してはおけない状態が何年も続いていた。

1101年の十字軍は失敗に終わり、1107年の秋から1110年にかけて5,000名規模・ガレー船60隻のノルウェー十字軍も行われたが巡礼者の危険な状態は依然つづいていた。

1119年　フランス・シャンパーニュの貴族ユーグ･ド･パイヤンほか9名でエルサレム巡礼者の警護を目的とした修道会・テンプル騎士団を結成。

1120年　エルサレム王国のボードゥアン二世と総大司教ヴァルムントに修道会の設立を願い出て承認される。ソロモン神殿跡地を譲り受け、そこに立つイスラム教徒から占領したアル＝アクサー・モスクを、修道会に本部として与えした。これがテンプル騎士団のエルサレム本部となる。

しばらくの間鳴かず飛ばずの状態がつづいていたテンプル騎士団だったが、その後九人の騎士のひとりアンドレ・ド・モンバールの甥で宗教界の要人であったクレルヴォーのベルナルドゥス（聖ベルナール）が修道会の強力な援護者として名乗りを上げたことによって様相が一変した。

1128年　ベルナルドゥスの尽力によりローマ教皇ホノリウス2世はフランスのトロアで開かれた教会会議でテンプル騎士団を騎士修道会として正式に認可した。

1139年　ローマ教皇インノケンティウス2世　テンプル騎士団に国境通過の自由、課税の禁止、教皇以外の君主や司教への服従の義務の免除、金利をつけた融資の許可…など多くの特権を付与。
